What is a Lottery?

Lottery is a game of chance, in which a number of players purchase tickets. The aim of the game is to choose a winning number. The prize is usually cash.

The first known lotteries were organized in the Roman Empire. During Saturnalian revels, wealthy noblemen would distribute lotteries, which were primarily for amusement.

In 1769, Col. Bernard Moore organized a “Slave Lottery” in which he advertised prizes such as slaves. He was reportedly the first to sell tickets in a lottery.

The Chinese Book of Songs states that the “drawing of lots” was a game of chance. The word lottery may have come from the Middle Dutch term for calque, or “drawing of wood”.
